Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week because of the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
